Oh Park, How I Love Thee

We discovered this really cool park.
Wonderful musical tyres, wooden ships and giant sand pits.
We played and played.

Way out West...

where... Mothers catch emus with their bare hands!!
where... Helicopters land in your yard just outside your window!
where... 9yr olds can drive manual cars.
where... Nature rules & people feel small.

where... Dust storms are ver, very DUSTY!
where... Windmills have names, "Southern Cross".

My cinquain about my current home!
Off to dinner in town- it only takes 2 hrs to get there
and
two hours to get back!!
Love you all- One eyed Kate (really!)

There are no shortcuts...

To any place worth going (Beverly Sills).  I guess this kind of sums up our holiday.  We took 2 weeks to meander about, and over 5000 kilometres later we'd seen some beautiful places.  We had no itenerary, we hoped to get to Portugal, but if we didn't that was cool too.  We had no new-fangled technology telling us where to go, just a big old map.  And these are just a few of the places it took us...San Sebastian.  We loved this place.  We drove through construction works and busy roads to pop out into this artistic, lively, beachey, relaxed city.  This was the city with the crazy-cool toilets, beautiful salt water, a Jesus statute standing sentry over the city, tiny streets, tapas bars, and a French man squeezing fake boobies at me in a cheap shop.  See, said it was lively!
Border crossing, Portugal.  Some said we'd never make it, some said our car would never make it.  Both were wrong.  What wasn't wrong though was the Red Cross collector at the border.  We zoomed up and saw someone standing at the crossing point.  I started tossing the debris of the front seat all over the place to find our passports.  We pulled up and realised that the clever charity workers had found the perfect spot for a donation.  We were guilted into giving them some change and then carried on...for 20 metres so we could stop and get this pic.
Porto, Portugal. This is Mr Eiffel's bridge.
And this is the craziness of where it starts from.
Tiled houses?  Yep.  Tiled churches?  Yep.
A different view of Luarca, Spain.  I just loved the way this little town was nestled in the hills.

So, only 2 more lots of photos to come peoples.  Don't be sad now...

I'm Begging You

Please, oh dear sisters of mine, do this to one of your children (perhaps with a beanbag on the ground in case of accidents).  It will make me smile for at least a month and a half.  And for other cool kiddy pic ideas check here.  I like the underwater one (see here for more of this amazingness).  I think next time we're together we should dress up and jump in the pool for a photo shoot.

The makings of me

I too have mountains of things that I could be doing......but I have heaps of things that I have made that I just have to show you.

Connor had a convict excursion today. This was his costume. He was very chuffed!
The convict rap apparently.
The sad convict face after working the chain gangs all day - or be woken up at 5:30 and asked to pose for photo's!
Kenzi needed a party dress. This one was a pattern that I borrowed off Mum and made it up from a sheet. She looked like a little 70's flower child...and all the mum's at the party put their order in!
Christmas present for a special little nurse (or daughter of a nurse!)
Birthday present for one of Kenzi's friends modelled by Kenzi.
My official label.
The skirt, T and crown for the party girl.
Crowns for Christmas.

Oh So Picture-skew!

There's mountains of washing to fold and put away.  There's thankyou cards to make.  There's errands to run.  Chores to do.  Instead I've just made a batch of honey roasted peanuts and I'm blogging.  That's why freedom of choice is a good thing.  These photos are landscape (kind of), some from out the window as we went zooming by, some from roadside stops, others from our meanderings.
A house.  In a field.  In France.  Along a country lane somewhere North or West of Paris.  Specific huh?

Another house.  This time, on a bridge.  Or rather, a fallen down bridge.  By the river in Vernon, France where we stopped for fried hotdogs and potato slices.
The fields of sunflowers.  A dodgy out-the-window-of-the-car photo, but I'm sure you get the idea.
My first taste of salt water for awhile.  I think I may have dried out.  Biarritz, France.

Tordesillas, Spain.  This river had BIG fish in it, just moseying about.  I think Dad and Andrew should take a trip.
Seaweed collecting boat, somewhere along the peninsula with Sao Jacinto at the end, Portugal.  This was the reason we had to come screaming to a stop for Andrew to take pics.  They're really cool boats and so colourful!
The view from our campsite in Luarca, Spain.  A church, a lighthouse and...
a lighthouse in the other direction too!
This is the church you could see from our campsite.
The town of Luarca, all huddled around the little harbour.

Artsy-Fartsy

I feel that taking my time over posting our holiday pics really means that I'm not back in the swing of uni work/cleaning the toilet/grocery shopping etc.  I think I can stretch it for at least another week.  Although I'm not sure the toilet can last that long.

This is the artsy post.  The one in which random photos of lines and shapes and out-of-focus things appear.  I took exactly zilch of these photos.  All the glory goes to the boy. He has an eye for it, I tell ya.

And now, onto the photos, in no particular order (although I just realised that I think they may be in backwards order).
The solitary figure, beside a church, on a cliff.  Andrew had stopped to take photos so I wandered up the road, what I hadn't realised was that he was taking photos of me.  Sneaky.
The roofs of Porto.  And the house in the background?  It's covered in tiles, as many houses are in Portugal.  I guess it makes for easy cleaning...or something...
This is the Mr Eiffel's bridge, it connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia across the river and was designed by the same guy who designed the Eiffel Tower.  It was a beautiful bridge, soaring and arching from far away, intricate and mecano-like from close up.  And it was such a contrast to the crumbling and peeling buildings where it started in Porto to the old cellars on the other side of the river.
We were driving towards Porto when Andrew came to a screaming holt.  It was photo opportunity time.  I really liked this close up of rusty old nails that he took.  There was a crumbling old boat on it's side by the water, I guess these are from that.
This is Joan the Mad's hand.  She was Queen of Spain until she married and then she had to go thirdsies with her husband and her husband's dad.  Once her husband popped his clogs she was declared unfit to rule (dastardly and scheming father-in-law, hmph).  She roamed about the country with her dead husband's body and ended up in Tordesillas.  Sad, mad, great photo opportunities.
A cross, outside the palace/convent where Joan the Mad lived.
Sunflowers, everywhere sunflowers.  It was so cool driving through fields of sunflowers.
The Guggenheim in Bilbao.  Arrooooooga!  I've been here before, but I loved it just as much, or even more (something to do with the company) this time.  It's an incredible, incredible building.  And the art installations were amazing.  We couldn't take photos inside (although A sneaked a few) otherwise I'm sure there would have been a few more in the Artsy-Fartsy series!
San Sebastian.  Great city.  Great clouds.  Great salt water (for swimming, aaah).
San Sebastian.  Great public toilets.  Andrew loved these.  This is only one of the many pics he took of them.  And only one of the many times he 'had' to use them.
Rent-an-umbrella in Biarritz.  We didn't.  They didn't match our towels.  Or our eye colour.
Biarritz. Stairs.  Cool lines.
Us.  In Biarritz.  In a mirror.
This was the plum tree above our tent that we stole plums from in France.  I love the colouring, such pale blue and such vibrant red.

And that's it...until the next lot.  Hope you're still enjoying the ride.

This is...
